Cathay Pacific Airlines has found itself embroiled in a sex scandal, leading to the cancellation of a new marketing campaign in Europe and Asia. The campaign’s slogan, “Meet the team that goes the extra mile,” took on new meaning after the release of this photo (if we have to warn you that that photo isn’t work safe you should be reading Fox or MSNBC). However, while the scandal has caused them some embarrassment and cost them business in some locations, it has also opened some new opportunities for them.
Thomas Lau, a spokesman for the Hong Kong airline said, “We were surprised at the flood of phone calls from American customers after the scandal went public. Most of the men calling didn’t even know who we were, and the most common question our operators were getting was Who do you service?”
Their advertising company has even finished the first mockup of their new American campaign. “The slogan for our new American campaign is going to be Meet the club that goes the extra mile for you. According to our market research consultants American men are willing to pay a ten percent premium just for the chance to fantasize about hot Asian flight attendants.”
He also indicated that the airline has found the image change a relief in the American market. “Until now we’ve never done much in the American market, mostly we flew Asian immigrants home for visits and creepy old American men to Thailand for sex tourism. Our marketing consultants estimate this will diversify the demographics of the American men that fly us.”
He further indicated that the scandal has opened up new commercial opportunities for them in the American market. “We’ve been getting calls from major airports in the central and eastern US asking us to open up routes, they don’t even care where we’re flying to. Oddly enough neither do the customers that have been calling.”
