In the Republican debate Monday night presidential candidates Rick Perry, Ron Paul and others clashed over the recent anniversary of 9/11 and what the causes for the event.
Representative Ron Paul (Texas) was soundly booed by the Republican crowd when he declared, “”Though it is hard for many to believe, honest studies show that the real motivation behind the September 11 attacks and the vast majority of other instances of suicide terrorism is not that our enemies are bothered by our way of life. Neither is it our religion, or our wealth.
“Rather, it is primarily occupation. If you were to imagine for a moment how you would feel if another country forcibly occupied the United States, had military bases and armed soldiers present in our hometowns, you might begin to understand why foreign occupation upsets people so much.”
Governor Perry immediately took umbrage at Paul’s remarks, expressing outrage at Paul’s “Blaming America for 9/11″ to thunderous applause from the crowd. He continued, “Of course they hate us for our freedom. Here in the US we’re free to have government exhaustively comb through our financial records without telling us so that they can find any possible violations of the law. We’re free to have government paid lawyers decide what pain medication in what amounts are right for us on threat of prosecution. Free to have government agents either take naked photos of us or cop a feel every time we fly. Brown skinned Americans are even free to fly on 9/11 and get arrested for their complexion, dragged off in cuffs by government agents and beaten into confessions. What other country has that sort of freedom?”
Matters got complicated when former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney interjected, “While I condemn Representative Paul’s remarks, I also take issue with Governor Perry’s, those freedoms shouldn’t be the privilege of the federal government but only the states.”
The crowd seemed perplexed as they tried to understand what Governor Romney was saying, however the applause returned when Representative Michele Bachmann declared, “These cowards deserve to die, we need to start threatening these rogue Middle Eastern states with nuclear weapons if they don’t obey us. The rest of the world needs to forced into the freedom of complete obedience no matter how many people we need to kill to do it.”
Early polling after the debate shows that actual Republicans still favor Governor Perry by a six point margin. Amongst Democrats planning on voting in Republican primaries to help out Barack Obama by providing him with the craziest possible opponent, Perry has a 36 point lead.
